DISEC
Delegates in the United Nations’  Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) will, as the name suggests, work together to achieve global disarmament and ensure the security of both its members and observers. Although this may seem straightforward, “security” has plenty of unique meanings for each state, and there are plenty of equally unique challenges that may threaten that same security. Whether threats come from as high as space, as deep as the sea, or as near as our own devices, through extending empathy, utilizing critical thinking skills, and cooperating with their fellow delegates, members of this committee will certainly pave the road for a safer, more secure future.
ECOSOC
Since its founding in 1945, the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has been dedicated to solving any economic, social, and environmental issue that the global community may face. Delegates will discuss, create, and debate innovative solutions to achieve a more sustainable future for all the UN’s members. This could take the form of expanding workers’ rights, building environmentally-friendly and renewable infrastructure, or even organizing a response to natural disasters. Though the issues faced in committee may be some of the most pressing of our time, the delegates of ECOSOC are sure to ensure that the future remains bright for not only the United Nations, but for the globe at large.
UNESCO
The United Nations Educational, Social, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has made it its mission to achieve world peace through the arts, sciences, and education. This could look like promoting free speech, ensuring the safety of journalists, protecting biodiversity, or even overseeing UNESCO’s long list of World Heritage Sites. Did you know that there are 1,248 UNESCO World Heritage Sites across 170 countries? Plus, there are plenty of more locations bidding for that recognition-- including the Virginia historical triangle (which includes Williamsburg!) Suffice to say, delegates in UNESCO have a big job in front of them. But through a multitude of exciting, creative ideas, delegates in this committee will certainly find unique ways to bridge gaps between nations, and bring us closer to a truly peaceful globe.
SOCHUM
In a globe brimming with beautiful and unique identities and cultures, delegates in the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee of the United Nations (SOCHUM) will be tasked with navigating complex issues pertaining to universal human rights. Obviously, every country agrees that human rights should be enjoyed… well, universally, but what exactly this means may look very different between states. Delegates could find themselves engaged in passionate debates ranging from the rights of children, to crime prevention initiatives, refugee support, and even indigenous issues. Though the stakes may be high, delegates in SOCHUM will surely lead their nations towards a kinder, cooperative future for all people.
