For The Republic: Congress of Cúcuta

Simón Bolívar envisioned a single federal state representing the former Spanish colonies of Gran Colombia (present day Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador), leading a military campaign to drive the Spanish out of the region. Then, at the 1821 Congress of Cúcuta, representatives of Gran Colombia’s various states assembled and signed the new republic’s constitution. In the wake of independence from Spain, the fate of South America depends on the outcome of this Congress.
