Defend it or Perish: Aftermath of the Haitian Revolution

In the spirit of the Enlightenment principle of, “men are born and remain free and equal” and the French Revolution, Toussaint Loverture and his collaborators organized the most successful revolution by enslaved people and drove out the French, establishing the first post-colonial, Black-led republic. However, without Loverture’s guidance, the remaining leaders were forced to contend with the destruction of a once-rigid social hierarchy, the construction of a new government, relationships with the European powers, and more.
