A Dangerous Remedy: Gunpowder Plot

Religious turmoil in England. When the reign of the Tudors came to an end with the death of Queen Elizabeth I, King James VI of Scotland assumed the throne for the House of Stuart as King James I of Great Britain. Like his predecessor, King James I was Protestant, and the Protestant kings had little regard for the Catholics of Great Britain, using varying methods of repression. Thus, a group of Catholic dissidents sought to replace the new king with a Catholic monarch, resulting in the so-called Gunpowder Plot.
